Slow Travel Cambrils Spain
Cambrils if one of those little towns along the Costa Dorada in Spain that gets busy when the cities get empty. Each August it seems Catalans escape the heat of summer from metropolitan Barcelona and go to the country side. Usually, so do tourists from around Europe.
Given my affinity to slow travel, rather than giving you a list of things to do in Cambrils, I will take you on a virtual stroll so you can get an idea of the atmosphere in this hidden gem on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.
Downtown Cambrils
Cambrils is low key compared to other Spanish sea resorts. In the old town with its winding, narrow streets there are cosy restaurants and locally owned shops selling clothing, souvenirs and decor. The historic tower of the port, Torre del Port, is now open for visitors. You can climb up inside and enjoy a view over Cambrils harbor.
A baordwalk invites you to stroll along the waterline. The vibe here is similar to other Spanish coastal towns, like Tossa de Mar on the Costa Brava. Vendors offer henna tattoos, caricatures of yourself and ice cream.
Beaches in Cambrils
Past the port, the beaches start. They are clean and well maintained with crysal turquois blue water and views of the hills while swimming. Near downtown there are huge blow up slides in the water that you can swim to.
Even further along the beach, the infrastructure remains solid. There are beach bars and sunchairs and shade available for rent. The long boardwalk is popular for bike rides and skaters as well.
From the beach in Cambrils you can see the rollercoasters of Port Aventura in Salou, a busy, touristy town nearby. If you have kids in the party, the amusement park makes for a great day trip. Otherwise Salou is for nightlife.
Historic sights near Cambrils
A few blocks away from Cambrils beach, you will find Castle Vilafortuny. It is now an event space you can rent for weddings and such. If however, you are specifically looking for historic architecture, I’d recommend a day trip to Tarragona. There is much more to explore and discover, amongst other things a Roman amphitheather. It’s literally only two train stops away.
