Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura, is a port city located on the eastern coast of the island. It is the capital and largest city in the province, and the administrative and commercial center of Fuerteventura. The city is known for its harbor, where the fishing boats and larger ships and ferries come in.
The city is also known for its shopping opportunities. The Las Rotondas Shopping Centre is the largest mall in the city, and it contains many international stores, as well as local boutiques. The streets of Puerto del Rosario are also full of shops, cafés, and restaurants.
Puerto de Rosario is home to the Casa Museo Miguel de Unamuno Museum. However, generally it is more of a port city than a tourist attraction. And while there may be more quaint old towns in Spain, Puerto de Rosario makes for a good base for day tours of Fuerteventura.
If you are coming here as part of a cruise, take advantage of the excursions that day, because there is a lot of fun to be had on the island!
How to spend one day in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura translates to “strong wind” – exposed to the Passat winds this island is one of the best destinations in the world for watersports like windsurfing. Particularly along the east coast of the island you will find windsurfing equipment rentals on the beaches. If you have experience in this sport, challenge yourself on Fuerteventura!

Naturally, you can spend the day walking along the marina and the smallish beach of Puerto del Rosario. In my personaly opinion though, you can make more of your day by leaving the town and exploring the island.
Another fun thing to do on Fuerteventura is to rent a jeep or an ATV and drive around the desert parts of Fuerteventura. It’s great fun, just remember you will get dusty 🙂 So, not the day to wear your finest outfit.
If you fancy a beach day, get out of the city and drive towards the southern tip of the island. There, you will find the Costa Calma with its sandy beaches and countless sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. Lots of the sand on these beaches was literally blown over from the Sahara desert! You are only about 95km (60 miles) away from Africa here.

I’ve had lots of fun both on the water and in the desert here. Remember to wear sunscreen 🙂
