things to do in Barcelona for culture lovers
Gran Teatre del Liceu
The Liceu is the opera house of Barcelona. It has a prime location on La Rambla. Besides opera, their shows also include concerts, recitals, dance and other musical performances. It has been an institution in the Barcelona cultural scene since 1847.
First Sunday Museums
Barcelona is a great city of the arts, architecture and history. Hence, there are many museums to explore. Several of the museums in Barcelona participate in free museum days. On the first Sunday of each month, entry is free of charge. This includes the Museu Picasso about world famous painter Pablo Picasso (get in that line as early as possible as tickets run out during the day). And the Botanical Gardens on Montjuic Montain. For more things to do on Montjuic see my post 10 things to do on Montjuic mountain, Barcelona.
Ruta del Modernisme

If you have ever been to Barcelona before you may have noticed red tiles with a floral imprint on the pavement. These are located at sites along the Modernism Route. Barcelona is world famous for its modernist architecture and this route will take you through the city to the most beautiful buildings.
Even though some of these buildings are portrayed on every Barcelona post card, not too many people actually take the time for this activity in its entirety. When I walked it, I was the only person in many places and had unobstructed views for photography.

Palau de la Musica Catalana
The palace of Catalan music is a coloful example of typical modernist architecture. I was designed by the local architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner arond the turn of the last century. Nowadays, you can either go for a tour of the building during the day (offered in several languages) or watch a performance of classical or choir music. The accoustics are praised even by the singers.
Flamenco Shows
Flamenco is as Spanish as can be. And while this expressive dance originated in the south of Spain, I am assured by a flamenco dancer that the Barcelona scene has grown significantly. There are many performers to chose from, in many locations around the city. Some offer packages of dinner and a dance show. Now, wouldn’t that make for a fantastic cultural evening out in Barcelona?
